Many Layers of Artistry

You can easily lose yourself in this exceptionally beautiful book.

In the preface photographer Oberto Gili writes, "Every image in this book is the memory of a great experience. The pictures are about seeing, learning, admiring, guessing, enjoying, and digesting. Their significance is not about d�cor as interior decoration. Nor are they about trendy or untrendy, modern or pass�, rich or poor, famous or unknown. Instead, d�cor serves as an expression of personality, fantasy, personal taste, culture and history. Whether the photographs were taken in the Seventies or today is irrelevant. In my vision, they all belong to the present, and I expect them to be there forever".

And indeed, what is most striking is how experiential and alive these images are. They aren't simply to be looked at - they're to be entered into, and they invite you in. As Susanna Salk writes in characterizing this living quality, "...his photographs looked as if the owner had just left a few seconds before the picture was taken". And so we see lounging pets, work in process projects, even intimate apparel or the contents of a pantry, all woven together in ways that are artful and unexpected.

This is a collection of Gili's photography of more than forty homes from around the world - an apartment in Milan, a New York loft, a villa in Tangier, even a castle in Rome. Also in its pages is an intimate exploration of the author's own farmhouse and studio in Piedmont. While an enormous stylistic range is in evidence, all are linked in their vibrancy and in their expression of creative lives well lived.

Inspirational Eye Candy

A lovely, oversize book of stunning photography. Mostly interiors, but it does show a few outdoor photos and artsy portraits as well. That was a little disappointing to me personally, because after all I paid $50-something to drool over SUMPTUOUS BOHEMIAN INTERIORS, not strange tinted pictures of naked women. Oh well. A minor complaint, and the reason for my four-star vote instead of five.

I have all three of the Michele Lalande books, so I never get tired of looking at really excellent examples of eclectic interior decor. This book does not disappoint on that front. So if you enjoy getting your eye full of other people's houses, or if you like the Lalande books and similar publications, such as Holly Moore's "Domestic Art: Curated Interiors", I think you will really enjoy this one. It's full of inspirational ideas and will help you to hone your own eye for what works. It includes a variety of styles, from the shabby-junky-well-worn that I adore on the cover, to more stark, modernist stuff that personally doesn't do anything for me, although the photos are still quite lovely.

P.S. Contrary to the ignorant remarks of another reviewer, this book does NOT actually promote communism {eyeroll}.

I love this book! It truly captures better than any other book the feeling of bohemian homes, from Minimalist Bohemian to Full Blown Bohemian. I plan to feature and recommend this book on my blog as a wonderful resource and inspiration for Bohemian home decor.

The moral blindness of Marxism

Steven Lukes, somewhat well-known popular philosophical author and also editor of the series "Marxist introductions", addresses perhaps one of the most difficult issues in the Marxist tradition: the problem of Marxism and ethics.

According to Lukes, the book is intended as "a contribution to socialist free-thinking", and in this case the contribution consists of making clear what the problem of moral blindness in Marxism is, what effect it has had on the various people who have discussed issues of morality within Marxism, and how Marxism cannot avoid a better elucidation of these issues if it is to be at all convincing. Lukes is very critical but in my view deservedly so - even the most superficial glance at the history of socialist politics will make clear the degree to which the problem of ethics in politics is in particular need of urgent resolution.

Lukes uses mostly the texts of Marx and Engels themselves, in all their contradictions, to posit what he calls the paradox of morality in Marxism: namely that on the one hand the goal of socialism is to be a supremely ethical one, based on the perfectionist and optimist conception of liberty inherent in Marxism, and that on the other hand every ethical theory and issue is downplayed or ridiculed by Marx and Engels as "so many bourgeois prejudices, behind which lurk in ambush so many bourgeois interests". Neither Marx nor Engels were at all consistent in their views on ethics, as Lukes shows, and even the question whether their condemnation of capitalism is or is not one with an ethical component is insoluble due to the contradictions in their texts.

The middle part of the book is really a sideline, in which Lukes establishes exactly what this conception of liberty is in Marxism, to show the aim of the movement to have the aforementioned high ethical level. He does this quite well, emphasising the way in which morality provides a problem even here, because it is never clear how the collectivist view of society and the Aristotelian view of human development are to be reconciled in actual policy in the future, leading most Marxists to shelve questions about the future society altogether as premature and utopian. This in turn causes many people to wonder why the sacrifices they are expected to make in the here and now for this future society are worth it, and how they know that they are worth it.

The meat of the problem in modern Marxism, as real political movement, is discussed by Lukes by way of assessing the various views of fellow travellers and former fellow travellers on the horrors of Stalinism. The major problem of Marxism is shown to be that of the means-ends relation, and how and when 'revolutionary violence' and similar things can be justified. Brecht, Merleau-Ponty, Sartre, Koestler, Trotsky and Luk�cs all provide different perspectives on this problem, most of them even changing their own views (usually towards a more liberal position) during their lives. This discussion is very interesting and serves excellently to show the possible conclusions about the means-ends relation that a Marxist could draw from the tradition, as well as how different these conclusions can be without any one of them being prima facie more based in the 'canon' than another. Clearly Marxism misses still a good tradition in normative ethics, which (and I say this as someone thorougly skeptical in ethical issues) is clearly a major gap in any major political movement.

Marx wrote that "mankind always sets itself only such tasks as it can solve". But as Lukes shows, this task has not at all been solved yet, despite the whole Leninist experience worldwide showing that the task has certainly been set. Who will solve this for us?

Steven Lukes offers us a pretty interesting read into Marxism and Morality. The book opens with a rather skeptical attitude toward the subject, and ends with a skeptical attitude toward Marxism post October Revolution, and a positive note regarding Marx's philosophy.

Anyone that has read a lot of Marx knows that clarifying a morality out of Marx's work is nearly impossible. And if not impossible, bordering on the contradictory. In some passages it's painfully clear that Marx believes the bourgeoisie are conducting a practice that is nefarious, and if not them, then society has organized itself around a heinous mode of production. But in other passages he talks about their being no such thing as moral ideals, and that appealing to morality in the class conflict, or struggle for socialism, is futile. Moreover, sometimes Marx will talk about justice being completely socially embedded, and not timeless. But then he'll say thing that imply an injustice has occurred (e.g. the capitalist steals value from the worker).

These seeming confusions have led numerous scholars all kinds of tortuous conclusions, some seemingly better than others, about what Marx really meant, or what we as socialist ought to mean.

Lukes navigates the reader through all these debates, from judgement, to emancipation (from alienation and capitalist exploitation), to means and ends. Along the way there are ethical philosophies put forward by Rosa Luxembburg, Karl Kautsky, my main man Lukacs, Trotsky, Sartre, and Merleau Ponty.

The author concludes stating that Marxism is right to reject grand ethical ideals, but simultaneously it needs to be less ambiguous and condescending of morals, to avoid the crimes committed in its name.

A classic I can revisit

I chose this book in the 1970s when I wanted to begin Hatha Yoga. I found it's step-by-step and day-by-day method very effective. I liked three days of progress followed by one day oc rest and consolidation. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I had learned and absorbed after 28 days.

I always intended this to be a baby book, an introduction, and I fully expected to have to find better books later as I advanced. It turned out that this book was good enough on its own. I lost track of it over the years, and was please to be able to find the book again.

This book is in a larger format than the original pocket-sized book I once had. You can still get the smaller book. I like the larger format.

I regret discontinuing my yoga practice. I had started late, in my thirties, and after a few years I had had made good progress. I don't remember why I stopped, except that I did when I got remarried. I must have been distracted by a full life.

I remember coming home from work and being tired. The last thing I wanted to do was thirty minutes of yoga. I almost always practiced anyway, and when I was finished I felt refreshed and glad that I had made the effort.

Now, as a senior, I believe it is best to return to at least some parts of Hatha Yoga in order to gain flexibility and suppleness. I dislike the idea of slowly becoming rigid and contracted, both physically and mentally.

A Classic

Richard Hittleman is how I learned hatha yoga after suffering a neck injury from a car accident in the mid-1980's. My doctor at that time recommended I try yoga to offset the chronic pain I was experiencing. This was long before yoga became the popular craze it is today and, back then at that time, the only people I knew who did yoga were kind of weird (no offense anybody!). I discovered his original book in the library, checked it out and began my 28 day program. I was a little skeptical at first but really wanted to feel better and keep chronic pain at bay. Well, the first two days I was so stiff and sore which was crazy to me since I exercised and that made me even more determined to be able to do what looked like very simple poses. By Day 10 or Day 11 let me tell you I was definitely hooked!!!! I was not as stiff or sore, I was in less pain, I was seeing progress and I went out and bought my own copy of the book. I hadn't even finished the 28 days when I realized my pain levels really had decreased. My body felt firmer and tighter. My muscles felt lengthened. I lost weight. I had more energy.

Richard is the master and created a systematic approach that builds upon each day to show you new asanas and clearly explain how to do them and their purpose. His tone is patient and affirming. Each chapter ends with thoughts for the day which recap the daily lesson or offers other health tip benefits. He provides 3 yoga routines at the back of the book that are all referenced if you need to go back to read the instruction on how to perform a pose. Truthfully, I still prefer using the routines in his book to today's newer yoga DVDs. Something about his book is just pure. Over the years I have been up/down in my practice with this book but he has a routine that remains my "go to" today if I am short on time or energy in the chapter Work is Not Exercise that always leaves me feeling revitalized and refreshed no matter how tired I was when I started the routine. I always struggle with weight issues and the routines in this book helped me lose weight. This book is also responsible for changing my approach to diet and nutrition and I eliminated several items from my diet that I still don't eat today. I try to do his routines 3-4 times per week.

My original book is so tattered and torn from using it so much. I've gone back to his original book so many times and decided I wanted to see if it was still available. I was thrilled to find it here and in the "larger size". This book contains the exact same content as the original but is just super sized compared to the original pocket sized book. The original pocket sized book is also available here at amazon. Over time you will come to memorize the three routines but I just like going back to the book. Each time I read it there are new nuggets to discover and pick up.

Fantastic book for Beginner Yoga program

fantastic beginner's Yoga book with clear pictures and day-by-day instructions to progress you with a great foundational program in Yoga. Cannot recommend highly enough. So glad to find this larger edition, with the bigger pictures, again. I have given away several copies to folks who expressed interest in Yoga, but too shy to show up to a beginner's class--which are sometimes difficult to find and usually have folks with much more experience in there, so makes the beginner uncomfortable. With Richard Hittleman's book, you can start your program at home at your own pace and there is definitely no pressure to push yourself beyond your limits as you sometimes find in some classes. He expressly warns you to take it easy and never hurt yourself. Fantastic Book that should never go out of print!

The vignette of the Mill which stood at the North end of the St. James’ Quarry in the title page, is from an original water colour drawing by an amateur (name unknown), dated 1821.
