Good writing but limited perspective

Jen Sincero is a talented writer, and her edgy, irreverent style will be inspiring and motivational to many readers. If you've read other self help books then you probably won't find much that's new here. In fact, it's really the in-your-face tone and humor in her writing that makes this book worthwhile. As for her ideas, I personally found a lot to take issue with. First, she has a very polarized view of spiritual growth that divides our lives in to those that suck and those that are awesome. Maybe that works for young millennials just starting out in life, and if that's the audience she’s g oing for, then great, but most of us are somewhere on a continuum and her assertions that life is either this way or that way are simplistic to say the least. Sincero also uses a lot of highly critical, edgy language to describe people who are struggling or stuck - therefore not as awesome as she is - using words like "lame-o " "suck" "wuss" ...well, you get the idea. This may be mildly amusing the first time around, but it gets old fast and it's not exactly kind to those who may really be struggling. I have to confess that I question a writer who continually references her own life choices and personal career success as a model that the rest of us should follow. There is an exhibitionistic, narcissistic, "look at me", "look at how successful I am" dimension running through this book that is self-indulgent while lacking insight about what success could mean or look like for another person. Read this book for a quick shot of motivation if that's what you need, it's good for that, but look elsewhere for help in developing your own ideas and values about success and purpose. This is the Jen Sincero version and it may not apply to you.

NOT for people with Depression. Be warned. Very triggering.

Okay, listen up. I ADORED this book. I subscribed to everything she said. I was literally prepared to go out and buy three more volumes for my friends.
Until Chapter 17.
About halfway through the book, Sincero begins talking about excuses. Okay, yes. A valuable thing to discuss. People, myself included, make excuses all the time. But she decides to target a set group of people.
People who are clinically depressed. She says, and I'm paraphrasing here, that depression is a comfort because it gives those who suffer from it an excuse not to do anything but stay in bed.
...
And that is precisely when I tuned out. I went from loving everything she said to eye rolling in a matter of seconds.
My clinical depression is not an excuse. It isn't me being lazy. It isn't me snickering as I back out on plans I make with friends. It's me literally being unable to do anything because my disease is keeping me from doing it. There are days where I can't do anything at all. There are days where laundry piles up and my bedroom becomes a disaster and I hide away from the world because I don't think I'm worthy of being seen. There are days where I stop seeing my friends because I feel like I'm a burden to them.
And my friends understand this. They know what I go through and they know that if I need some time to myself to get my brain under control, then it isn't an excuse. It doesn't mean I don't love them. It means that I'm just dealing with negative thoughts and I need to work through it. The fact that Sincero completely misunderstands depression ruined this book for me instantly. Yes, I will admit she gives valuable advice. But once I figured out that her advice disvalues someone like me, I checked out.
Also, her advice...is highly privileged. She says things like, "If you can afford this book, then you're doing okay." "Just buy the car of your dreams!" "If you want to travel the world, stop making excuses and you can." Some people...can't do that. Don't get me wrong, I'm in a good place right now but a year ago? I could barely pay my student loans. I couldn't afford to replace the khakis that were part of my work uniform. I ate leftovers for days on end because my paycheck wasn't going far enough. I didn't blame the universe for this. And I certainly didn't spend beyond my means just because I thought 'the universe owes me and will figure it out.' Sometimes, you're just in a s***ty place in life. I was in a s***ty place for three and a half years. Going out and spending money on a trip around the world isn't exactly sound advice for everyone. I felt like Sincero was speaking to one small group of clients. I didn't fit within that group.
Like I said, she does say some really nice things. She did build me up for quite a few chapters. But she dropped me instantly and it hurt. Depression is hard enough. People with depression shouldn't hear that it's an 'excuse.' I was highly offended and if I wasn't so far in the book, I would've stopped reading altogether.
Needless to say, I'm pretty glad to be done with this one.

I will be the dissenting voice here. This is basically a repackaging of "the Secret" philosophy that I just don't agree with. The idea that you can get WHATEVER you want by just VIBRATING at the RIGHT level just doesn't make sense to me..it also places the blame on you (if you're not getting everything you want in life you're just not vibrating on the right level). Please. Yes there are powerful forces in the universe but I don't believe we control everything...such a Western omniscient POV. If you subscribe to "wish craft" and the Secret you will enjoy this book and it may point you in more positive direction.

Very narrow minded support forTrump

I am a very conservative Christian whose choice for GOP presidential candidate would have been Mike Huckabee, an intelligent, well-spoken leader with respect for all people, even those he strongly disagrees with. What are Americans thinking? Choosing a president should not be a divisive
process. We should chose a person of outstanding character and sound judgement that all Americans can admire and be proud to support, even though we might not agree with every policy.

Good Insight Into Dealmaker, Quick, Easy Read. Falls Short of Showing Why Trump Will be Elected President

Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first? Yes.

Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures? No.

Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read? Yes, very fast.

What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made? Plain English. No profanities.

My biggest pleasure or disappointment? Although it does a good job explaining the history of Donald Trump, especially in regards to his early efforts that caught the eye of former First Lady Pat Nixon, it does not well articulate why Donald Trump will be elected President. The one point the author makes, regarding at attempt by others to derail Trump, does indeed resonate. It is just that, by itself, it does not make the point.

Aside from failing to make the point implied by the title, this is an excellent article worth reading by borrowing through Kindle Unlimited. The price is a bit steep, but, for some it is worth the price. Myself, I love KU.

Donald J. Trump was not taken seriously by large segments of people when he first entered the running for president. His announcement speech was polarizing, insensitive to many people’s sensibilities, and as some would say an all round disaster. There were rumors that although he had a large crowd at his presidential-campaign announcement, many of the people who were in attendance were paid actors who had been promised $ 50 to act like enthusiastic fans, claims that Trump and his team vehemently denied.

Despite all the negativity that seems to surround ‘The Donald’, he always seems to come out on top, and his never-give-up attitude has led to him being by far the only competition that the Democratic party candidates have from the Republican side. The fact that his approval rating is so high means that should the American people go to the polls today, not only will he be a clear winner for the GOP, but he may also be the only person that can challenge Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders for the Presidency.

The best example to give to show just how Trump can turn a bad situation into a good one is to give an example of what happened in the aftermath of him giving out Senator Lindsey Graham’s phone number.

After the incident, the online publication Gawker thought it would also get one up on Trump by giving out HIS personal phone number. However, instead of doing what Graham did and destroying the phone, he used the situation to his advantage and recorded a message that actually helped his campaign, and sent callers to either his website or his twitter page. Thismove not only gave him more presence on the internet, it actually swayed some of Graham’s supporters towards him. In fact, Graham’s numbers dropped so low that by December 22 he had dropped out of the presidential race.

This not only shows the power that Donald Trump has in the Republican party, it also goes to show how much he can sway people in his direction…

What Does a Liar Look Like ?

It is so refreshing to read the truth. It is almost impossible to get truth from our media. Some of the things Dick reports I have already known. But it takes on more oomph coming from Dick Morris, who worked closely with the Clintons years ago. He knows more about them than others , and this alone must frustrate the Clinton Machine . Dick tells us a lot about Hillary, and her deviant lifestyle. Reading these and other things about Hillary ought to make a normal person shudder to think of her as our next president. "Read it and Weep", as the old saying goes. To look back into her life and not realizing how she had been lying and stealing from us during those years is a sad, sad journey. Hillary has a very dark, selfish and deceitful soul. May God Almighty keep her away from the Oval Office. This book is desperately needed for all who love America !!

About the Author
Tim Thompson is a Reader in Biological and Forensic Anthropology at Teesside University, where he also acts as a consultant forensic anthropologist. Most of his research examines the effects of burning on the skeleton and how this can help interpret the context of death. He is also interested in the relationship between identity and identification, modification of the body in the modern context, and the role of forensic anthropology in the world at large.

Intense, Shocking, Not for the Faint Hearted

Tim's third book is a very intense and revealing read. It is not for the faint hearted. However it is a must-book for anyone who may be tampering with the paranormal, unaware of the realities in the spirit realm. EVIL realities.
Tim writes from personal experience, as he dwelt in a world of demonic visitors and evil spirit guides from the time of his youth. It all began with the death of his older brother and a chance remark at the funeral, a statement that "God took the boy."
The child Tim grew to hate God for "taking" his brother, and soon found false comfort in the deceitful and evil spirit world.
Since the startling and glorious moment when Jesus redeemed his life, Tim has been passionate about revealing the deceptive nature of the so-called paranormal: psychic, supernatural, ghostly, and future-telling realms. He strips the "Harmless" label off Satan's evil schemes and gives the reader a look at a horrible reality.
Pray before you read.

The Screwtape Letters for our generation

This review is by Kim Bishop author of Resistance, The Revelations -- Like Tim Thompson, God has shown me visions of the place we call hell. It's not a joke. This book shows some truths that many Christians would like to sweep under the carpet. They don't understand that demons are real and attacking always and everywhere. This book reminded me of The Screwtape Letters, a book that opened many people's eyes to the mind of demons. The format of short letters makes it a quick read, and easy to pick up and put down without losing the power of the message. I especially liked how it showed the power of prayer and the fear and destruction that it causes the demonic world. This is not a book for the close minded. It is chock full of dark, scary images that many do not want to admit actually happen outside the world of hollywood and make believe. If you are willing to put your fear in the supernatural aside and realize that God's power is mightier than the demonic host this book will give you strength and purpose in the battles of Spiritual Warfare. I especially liked the scriptures at the end of the book: scriptures to convict and scriptures to pray. I would highly recommend this book to those serious about spiritual warfare and how it is waged.

Amazing Volume, Don't let the Creative Commons Attribution or On Demand Print Fool You...

This is not a text to be read, but to be studied, referenced, cherished. Eijkhout is truly the rarest of creatures-- a present day polymath. There is simply NO way a single text or author can cover the entire field of scientific supercomputing in a single text, and yet this is the closest I've found in reviewing and teaching from dozens of texts.

To begin your journey of astonishment, when first seeing that this is a creative commons book (and freely available as a pdf online), you might mistake it for, heaven forbid, one of those hack commons books that are a copy of Wiki articles. DO NOT MAKE THAT MISTAKE! This text is perhaps the finest single collection of HPC/Supercomputing information on the planet, when you consider the online additions, code and amazing amount of references, both books and articles.

Also don't be fooled by the word "Introduction." This is clearly a graduate level supercomputing text, unless you're a top Senior undergrad specializing in HPC at MIT. Because there is simply no way to cover all the modern applications of HPC, from defense and cryptography to weather, fusion, molecular modeling and astrophysics, there also is no way to completely cover all the computational underpinnings of those applications, from numerical modeling to parallel computing, architecture, software, chips, compilers, numerical linear algebra and a career long school of hard knocks practical summary of performance optimization tricks and traps. So, the author gives brief "snippet" summaries of each topic, assuming you know the notation of advanced matrix algebra, eigenvalues, Frobenius norms, difference stencils and other advanced topics in HPC and computational mathematics. The text "teaches" these topics by giving fast, practical examples, online code, and then a wealth of references and bibs, so do not expect deep coverage of each topic, and do not expect it to be "introductory" if you're rusty in partial differential equations, complexity theory (both arithmetic and memory), or advanced linear algebra.

This is clearly a practice/skill oriented text that both strikes a balance between theory and research and provides a wonderful cookbook of ideas for practical problem solving when NP hard problems need to be reduced to polynomial time, not just with code or software, but with deep knowledge of processor and circuit architecture also. I teach an online class in supercomputing, mostly to graduate Engineers, and this text resonates most with those who have either worked in a top HPC environment, or built their own GPU based platforms. Although the author has to sacrifice depth for breadth in 500 pages, you get enough of each topic to explore it in depth with other references. For example, the couple pages on vector processors give enough of a "taste" to find the three books and 14 most current (as of 2016) articles on the topic, but won't "teach" you vector processing as I'm sure you would guess.

I'm a budget oriented teacher, but I also highly recommend you buy this text, not just get the online PDF, both to reward the publisher and author (the book is self published, on-demand, and kept up to date as is the pdf), and have a tool at hand that is much easier to use in print than as a pdf. DO get the pdf and online code and examples of course, but this is one where the print copy is a MUST due to density, and complemented by the online code, which you can copy and paste into your system for experimentation and practice. I'm rarely this enthusiastic about a single (incomparable) text, so need to say that I have nothing to do with the author or publisher, and my students pay full price for this text when they use it in my classes, nor have I solicited or received samples, although I do use the free online materials and version extensively. Highly recommended.

Manufacture quality is awful, content great

I haven't deeply read the book, and it looks that content is great, actually it's the first book for HPC that I see that takes this approach (scientific applications, how to manage precision, etc) and that for me it's amazing.
But I give to it just two starts because the manufacture quality of the book is awful, nasty, a clone book would look better!

Not what I wanted to read about.

I have always really liked Karin Slaughter's books. I especially like the Will Trent series.I would not enjoy a series centered on Angie. More than half of this book is devoted to Angie, a thoroughly unsympathetic central character for a book,. We got to read about who she talked to, who she met. what just crazy, selfish thoughts she has, how her car was running. I kept fast forwarding hoping we'd get back to the characters I thought the book would be about, Will and Sara, Amanda and Faith, and their lives. I also think Slaughter has pretty much wrung all she can out of Will's sad past and I would enjoy more story lines about his present day and his life with Sara. These are great characters and maybe there could be a more interest centered on their present day lives and challenges given that they have such interesting lives and occupations. Everybody moves on sooner or later, especially if they are happy. I was very disappointed that the ending seems to portend yet more of the same. I would be careful when the next Trent book is released to make sure it's mostly about the characters I want to read about. before I buy.

A story that was a long time coming....

I have been reading the Grant County/Will Trent series since the start. And Karin Slaughter is one of my top 3 mystery/thriller series. So it pains me to score this book lower than a 5. LIked it YES, really liked it NO. No because I didn't get what I personally wanted from the book, not that it's a bad book or that the story isn't an amazing suspense/thriller. It's just, for me, I was a bit disappointed.

This story was a long time coming. We have all been wanting some kind of resolution with the Sara/Will/Angie storyline. Honestly, we have all wanted Angie to go away and never come back. And it looked like we might have gotten that, for a split second. But this book is really about Angie's backstory. Who she is, why she does what she does. She is a horrible person, and she can't let Will go so he can be happy with Sara. She continually pokes at their lives, reminding them that she is like a cockroach that will never go away.

The story that Angie's story is threaded thru is nothing special. Basketball greats acting like spoiled, men who think they can get away with using and abusing women. Blah, blah, blah. It is just a platform to pull all the players together.

I won't spoil the real identity of the players, you get to put that puzzle together yourself. And it is a true Karin Slaughter puzzle. I almost had to get a whiteboard out to follow the bloodline and trail of identities and relationships. That, I will give 5 stars, because that is what Slaughter is great at. Building the suspense of the ultimate puzzle. And it's a brilliant puzzle, surprises around every corner.

My problem is I usually get resolution, and I didn't get that. Not the resolution that I wanted anyway. And maybe it will come in the next book (i hope so). I believe that Will and Sara deserve to have something after all the pain and loss they have had in their lives.

Not a stand alone book, great addition to the series.

If you have followed the Will Trent series from the beginning, especially if you have followed the series since Sarah and her first husband you will enjoy this newest addition. If you are new to the series you will struggle with not only the storyline, but Will Trent in particular - you may not even like Will in this book...this would be so unfair as he is a great character.
This book focuses a lot on the back story of Will and Angie (Will's wife), issues that have come up between Angie and Sarah (Will's girlfriend), and Angie's past with the department. The past is all tied together with the current case that the department is currently working on, with Angie right smack in the middle of. It is really hard to explain without giving spoilers.
Slaughter does what she normally does and gives great character development and a fantastic story that builds on her previous books. I honestly don't feel this is a stand alone book because there is so much rich history about characters that we have come to love (or hate) and to not have that going into this book, well I could see were you would just dislike all the characters.
I do wish for a more permanent ending with Angie. I am really sick of her having her claws in Will. I believe Slaughter wants to try to get us to like her in some small way like she did Lena in previous books, but I was never a fan of Lena's either.
